Grain is one of the five principle resources in Catan. When a field's corresponding number is rolled, any player who has a settlement or a city adjacent to it receives grain. 
for a settlement, for a city. Grain is primarily used for building settlements, upgrading settlements to cities, and building development cards. However, grain can have other uses depending on which expansions are used, such as activating knights in Catan: Cities & Knights.
